An ABR REALTOR® is trained and transaction-tested to work for the buyer. The letters mean the agent completed the ABR core course, studied buyer representation as a specialty, and closed multiple transactions as a buyer's representative, not as a middleman.
Not every agent works the same side of the table. An Accredited Buyer's Representative has studied how to protect a buyer's interests at every step: pre-approval and budget, neighborhood and property research, offer strategy, inspection negotiation, and the final walkthrough. For buyers, the designation is a signal that representation is the point, not an afterthought.
What the designation means
The ABR designation is awarded by the Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council (REBAC), an affiliate of the National Association of REALTORS®. Earning it requires completing the ABR core designation course and an elective, then acting as a buyer's representative in at least five closed transactions. In other words, it takes both study and real-world experience: coursework plus a proven record of representing people who bought homes.
Why it matters to you

Your agent should know how to keep your interests first: what the numbers really allow, which repairs to ask for, how to time an offer, and when to push back.
