What is it like to live in Wyoming, IL?

Two things: the Rock Island Trail and its railroad past. General Samuel Thomas founded the town in 1836, originally calling it Spoon River, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad later made it a depot stop. Today the Rock Island Trail State Park is headquartered in that restored depot, and its paved trail through the old rail corridor is one of the region's favorite rides.

Wyoming is also the county-seat anchor of Stark County: the Stark County Fair makes its home on the fairgrounds in town each summer, and county services keep a working downtown alive.

Wyoming is served by Stark County Community Unit School District 100, which runs Stark County Elementary (prekindergarten through fifth grade) in Wyoming, the junior high in Toulon, and Stark County High School in Toulon.

Because the district covers the whole county, Wyoming kids grow up alongside students from Toulon and the surrounding farm country, and the high school is where the entire county comes together on game nights. A small share of students on the district's edges attend a neighboring district instead, so I always confirm the assigned school for a specific address.

Wyoming is about 33 to 35 miles from downtown Peoria, and the drive down IL-91 through Princeville and Dunlap typically takes 45 to 55 minutes, ending at War Memorial Drive on the north side of the city.

It is a straightforward two-lane state-highway commute through farm country, which most residents happily trade for the price of a home here. For daily commuters it is a decision to make with eyes open; for flexible schedules, remote work, and the hospitals' shift patterns, it is manageable.

The housing stock is classic small-town: older frame and brick homes near the center of town, ranch houses on generous lots, and farmhouses with acreage at the village edges. New construction is rare, and inventory stays thin.

Average home value estimates run around $120,000 to $130,000, and recent sales have ranged from under $100,000 to well over $300,000 depending on acreage and condition. That spread is why the comps matter: two Wyoming houses can be completely different purchases, and I price each one from current sold data rather than a town-wide average.

The Rock Island State Trail is the big draw: a paved trail right in town for bikes, walks, and cross-country skis. Spoon River Bowl keeps the lanes busy, Hunt Brother Pizza and Subs does the local takeout, and the Stark County Fair fills the fairgrounds each summer.

Toulon, with its courthouse square, West Main Coffee Company, and Connie's Country Kitchen, is about ten minutes away, and the Spoon River country back roads are made for Sunday drives. Peoria's full entertainment scene is under an hour south.
