What is it like to live in Edelstein and Speer, IL?

Edelstein sits on the prairie just off IL-40 in Peoria County's Hallock Township, about 7.5 miles west of Chillicothe. It is a classic crossroads community: a scattering of homes, a church, and farmland in every direction, with its own ZIP code, 61526. The name comes from the German word for gemstone, a nod to the German families who settled this ground.

Speer is a similarly tiny community in Stark County, about 8 miles southeast of Wyoming, with its own ZIP code, 61479. Between them, the two settlements are served by the towns around them: Princeville and Wyoming are the closest village hubs, Chillicothe sits to the east, and Dunlap lies on the way to Peoria.

Neither community is trying to be a town. What they offer instead is the rarest commodity in real estate near Peoria: genuine rural privacy, on paved roads, with real towns a short drive away.

The school boundary is one of the first things to verify here, because the two communities land in different districts. Edelstein is served by Illinois Valley Central Unit District 321, the district headquartered in Chillicothe that runs IVC High School and the area's elementary and junior high buildings.

Speer is served by Stark County Community Unit School District 100, which runs Stark County Elementary in Wyoming and the junior high and Stark County High School in Toulon. School bus routes, not town lines, define daily life in these communities, so I always confirm the assigned school for the exact address.

Edelstein is the closer of the two, about 17 miles north of Peoria, with a drive of roughly 25 to 30 minutes on IL-40 into the north side of the city.

Speer is farther out, about 35 to 40 miles via IL-91 through Princeville and Dunlap, with a drive of roughly 45 to 55 minutes. If the daily commute matters most, Edelstein wins easily; if the deepest quiet matters most, Speer is worth the extra minutes.

Sales are rare in both communities, and the stock is what you would expect: farmhouses on acreage, ranch homes on country lots, and occasional small-holdings with outbuildings and room for animals. When a property comes up, it tends to be bought by people who have been waiting for exactly it.

Because there are so few sales, there is no reliable town-wide median. Prices depend on acreage, outbuildings, condition, and how close the property sits to the paved roads that matter. Wyoming, a few minutes north of Speer, has the Rock Island State Trail, Spoon River Bowl, and Hunt Brother Pizza, and Dunlap and Peoria cover everything else when you want the city. Between it all are the farm roads, the quiet, and the space that are the whole reason people look here.
